'Sorry, we can no longer hold the Peace Walk' - Gov. Sanwo-Olu apologised to Lagosians

At least the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has allowed wisdom to prevail over his previous plan to hold a peace walk in Lagos. The aim of the proposed plan was to appease the wrong melted to Lagosians during the EndSARS protest.

In his press briefing on Thursday December 9,  the governor said the move is no longer necessary because of the prevailing circumstances on ground, specifically the spread of new covid-19 variants - Omicron.
According to him it will not be proper to endanger the lives of Lagosians more by exposing them to the pandemic.

“We chose to be guided not by our emotions, but expert opinions rooted in science. Between Tuesday 30, November 2021 that I made my address, and now, we have seen a significant rise in cases associated with the Omicron variant of this pandemic.

“Given this development, I am constrained to stand down all preparations for the walk for peace. I will not endanger the life of any Lagosian in my sincere search for peace,” he said.

Earlier before now the Governor had invited dignitaries that cut across different professions to take part in the peace walk. But majority of the celebrities invited turned down the request describing the plan as an insult on the Nigeria youths.

The criticisms that followed the plan led some concerned Lagosians to prevail on the governor to cancel the event. Even though Gov. Sanwo-Olu expressed  appreciation to those who were willing to attend it is obvious the exercise would have been in futility.

Some Nigerians who spoke with our correspondent on the subject describe the action of the governor as commendable stressing that the governor knew it would have been a calamity. According to them the youths in Lagos are more exposed to events happening around them and will cause more havoc if the plan is allowed to hold.
